英文摘要 | Fifteen Luanta fir trees representing 15 different wind-pollinated families from a 25-yr-old central Taiwan plantation were selected to study the radial variation pattern in specific gravity (SG). This was subsequently used to explore the validity of sampling only a few growth rings in the outer increment core zone as a means of an alternate non-destructive sampling method. From each sample tree, a pith-to-bark, 0.45-cm caliber increment core at breast height was extracted and then separated into 12 growth ring groups (each containing 2 growth rings); their extracted SGs were determined individually. An analysis of variance and correlation analysis were used to evaluate the data. The radial variation in mean SG was from 0.306 to 0.399, a difference of 30%; while the between- tree differences were from 0.276 to 0.381, a change of 38%. Sampling of only 2 to 3 growth ring groups (or 4 to 6 growth rings) near the bark would provide the needed data in the assessment of genetic information on wood specific gravity. |
