英文摘要 | By use of interpretive ethnographic methodology with thirty-five widows interviewed in both rural and urban areas in Taiwan, this article delineates the main themes embedded in these participants' narratives related to their perceptions of marriage and family. It was found that Taiwanese women tend to perceive marriage as a "no-return-trip". Under the impact of cultural ideology of continuity, Taiwanese women have felt no choice but "fit in" to this trip, which is harsh in most cases and suffering in some cases. In addition to the themes of the "no-return-trip," "fitting-in," and "continuity of family line," three other themes attached to women's perceptions of marriage are also discussed: one man in a life time, dependence, and subordination. The findings of this research have verified that the cultural ideology of marriage provides a natural context for Taiwanese woman to cope with--while their husbands are still alive or otherwise. They also confirmed an ontological perspective which views social reality as a projection of human imagination and consciousness, a social construction and a symbolic discourse. |
