英文摘要 | In recent years there have been major conceptual, theoretical, and analytical shifts in the historical anthropology of colonialism. Howerver, the problem of the colonial state remains largely unaddressed. How is it to be conceptualized ﹖ As one thing or many or nothing at all ﹖ As a cultural artefact, an ideological project, an ensemble of governmental institutions ﹖ Is it to be understood as a specific form of regulation or a condition of being in the world ﹖ Is there anything to be made of the fact that, "state," in its verb form, "to state," connotes to "give voice," to "articulate", to "narrate" ﹖ In order to answer these questions, a parallel reading and critiqueis offered of (i) modernist approaches to the colonial state, liberal and marxist; and of (ii) more recent postmodern, postmarxist, poststructuralist alternatives. On the basis of this critque, the colonial state is conceptualized anew, its inherent contradictions and variations of historical form laid bara--thus to pave the way for further conceptual and empirical work in the historical anthropology of colonialism, sui generis. |
