英文摘要 | PRC's late paramount leader Deng Xiaoping once said: "Developing is the real truth." Communist China has ended its decades of confrontation with the United States since it established official relations with Washington in 1979, which contributed to increasingly rapid development in the economic and trade links between the two sides. According to statistics released by Beijing, bilateral trade reached US$309.6 billion during the 19-year period from 1979 to 1997, with annual growth rate exceeding 20 percent on average since the 1990s. Trade development was followed by mutual investment. By the end of 1997, US businessmen actually invested US$17.5 billion in a total of 24,400 projects in the mainland, while the flow of investment from more than 500 PRC enterprises to the US amounted to nearly US$500 million. In spite of highly developed economic and trade relationship between the both sides as a result of the increasingly colse links, the mounting trade imbalance in favor of mainland China has led Washington to use diplomatic means to make Beijing to address the issue. On the other hand, mainland China has also blamed the US for the delay in its entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO). Such quarrels over economic interests are expected to be detrimental to the relations between both sides. This article discusses the issues plaguing relations between Washington and Beijing such as trade balance. Most Favored Nation (MFN) trade status, imposition of quota for PRC exports to the US, anti-dumping, intellectual property rights (IPR), piracy, Beijing's entry into WTO, as well as communist leaders' views on trade ties with Washington in the analytic account of trade quarrels existing between both sides. |
