英文摘要 | Since the mainland was under the communist rule in 1949, great changes have taken place in the status of the peasants. Overseas Chinese have been thinking about the question of how the Chinese peasants on the mainland will exercise their rights to be the master of the country. People can not help asking this question: if the mainland wants to develop democracy, why they choose rural villages to do so. Communist leaders always claim that the educational level of mainlanders as a whole is not high enough for democracy as there are still large numbers of illiterates. Currently there are 150 million illiterate people. Does that mean a non-democratic China is justified? In fact, prevailing ideas of democracy among the peasants is just a means used by communist rulers to achieve the goal of establishing a rural collective economy. Democracy, as interpreted by communist leaders, is totally different from what Westerners think about. For communist Chinese, economic development still depends on collective economy. |
