英文摘要 | Wetlands are among the most productive ecosystems in the world. Wetlands mitigate flooding, delay the time of peak flooding, decrease erosion, stabilize shorelines, purify water and provide critical habitat for plants, animals and microorganisms. In addition, wetlands are both sources and sinks for nutrients. Wetlands have long been neglected because of their low economic value. However, recognition of the many important functions of wetland ecosystems has resulted in an increase in their valuation and concern for their protection and restoration. The purpose of this paper is to define and classify wetlands and to discuss their various functions, including their role in nutrient cycling. |
