英文摘要 | This paper on Wei Yun(1913-1996) is a slightly revised version of an excerpt taken from a full-length paper delivered in Kuala Lumpur and incorporated in an authoritative book entitled A New History of Malaysian Chinese, 3 vols. (1998). The strategy and method I employed in writing this paper is both microscopic and macroscopic in that I want to both situate and canonize Wei Yun in the History of Malaysian Chinese Literature, and I also contended that his two novels Shallow Shore (1960) and The Ocean Never Changes (1997) are among the few masterpieces which have ever been written in Malaysia. Having closely followed the permutations and shifts of socio-political powers in that country, this paper attempts not only to highlight the diasporic features of Wei Yun's novellas and novels but also to canonize their author as one of the few masters of realism in Malaysia who had never slackened his efforts to both experiment and create and whose novels do possess the stature and the sublime aura of sagas. |
