英文摘要 | It was previously thought that the fiber in foods was only an indigestible and non- useful wasted component. It has been, however, recognized that it can assist the motility of the GI tract, prevent constipation and prevent certain cancers. Recently, many studies have demonstrated that dietary fiber is a very important beneficial substance for reduction of serum and/or hepatic lipids, especially cholesterol. Our study demonstrated that the top part of fresh bamboo shoots significantly reduced serum total lipids, very low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (VLDL-C), low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) and VLDL-triacylglycerol (VLDL-TG), and enhanced high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) values. The top part of aged bamboo shoots had a smaller effect on serum lipid values. However, the bottom part of aged bamboo shoots, which was rich with lignin, did not affect serum lipid levels in rats. Our studies also revealed that dietary guar gum, polydextrose, pine fiber, fructooligosaccharides and isomaltooligosaccharides could reduce serum cholesterol and triacylglycerol in rats but only total cholesterol and LDL-C in humans. Serum triacylglycerol was not significantly affected by dietary polydextrose and oligosaccharides in hmans. Only guar gum and soybean oligosaccharides diminished liver cholesterol; however, pine fiber elevated liver TG in rats. Many studies have shown that the fiber in oat is one of the best substances for reducing serum lipids in animals and humans. |
