英文摘要 | This article is based on the author's experience in teaching or leading discussions on social theory and comparative sociology in three Chinese societies, Hong Kong, the mainland, and Taiwan, and in two Western societies, the United States and Australia. The author observes that Chinese students(including less-experienced scholars), in contrast to their Western counterparts, have shown a number of particular difficulties in grasping social science concepts which were basically developed in the Western social and intellectual context. There are at least three roots of misunderstanding on the part of Chinese students: the linguistic, including confusion caused by translation; the ontological, referring to the Chinese's unique historical and modern experiences, which formed the unspoken point of reference for the students to interpret anything abstract, which are so vastly different from the Western nations' experiences, and which are too obstinate to fit into the established explaining frameworks in the West; and the methodological, i.e., the logic and methods that some of highly abstract, analytical social science conceptions are constructed. To illustrate each of these comprehension problems, I cite several basic social science concepts or terms for detailed discussion. The article not only compares Chinese students with Western students, but also makes comparisons among the different Chinese student bodies. The two-level comparisons allow the author to identify what specific social experience causes a certain type of misreading. Although posing special difficulties to social science educatiion, the article concludes, the tensions between Chinese social realities and Western social science conceptions also provide opportunities for the dewesternization or internationalisation of the current social science analytical frameworks. |
