英文摘要 | The huang黃 colour in Chinese is usually translated as "yellow" in English, and as ki in Japanese. But sometimes it is presented differently. For instance, huanggou黃狗 is not rendered as kiinu黃犬, but as akainu赤犬 Japanese, and huangma 黃馬, not as kiuma, but as akauma赤馬. Also, huangniu黃牛 is not called kiushi, but ameushi(飴牛, caramel ox). In Arthur Waley's The Book of Songs. The reason for these differences. I think, is the limitation of the vocabulary for colour in the two languages. The Hanyu dacidian漢語大詞典 says, "Huang is the colour like gold or the ripe apricot." I think the colour "like the ripe apricot" has some riddish elements. Therefore in Japanese, huang it is translated as aka (reddish), and in Waley's The Book of Songs, it is rendered as "bay". |
