英文摘要 | This essay concentrates on Wang Yangming's Mencius-hermeneutics which appeared in Wang's celebrated Chuan Xi Lu (Instructions for Practical Living). We will consider, in Section Ⅱ, how Wang interpreted Mencius, that is, the contents of Wang's interpretation of Mencius. In Section Ⅲ, we consider those distinctive characteristics manifested by Wang's Mencius-hermeneutics, that is, its distinctive features. In Section Ⅳ, we will consider some "perlocutionary intentions" of such a hermeneutical quest and trend in China, that is, its significance. In the following pages we will first examine (Section Ⅱ) Wang's interpretations of Mencius by considering his understanding of Mencius' key yet puzzling phrases, having "insight into words and cultivation of qi" (知言養氣) and "accumulating rightness" (集義) in Mencius 2A2, and "knowing heart-mind, knowing nature, knowing heaven" (知心,知性,知天) in 7A1. Then in Section Ⅲ we explicate how Wang produced one typical trend in Chinese hermeneutics which is a hermeneutical unification of the interpreter-subject with the interpreted text-object. This type of Chinese hermeneutics presents the stages of progress of the subject's personal experience and reports the "journey" of self- cultivation that is both personal and peculiar to an individual. It is thus that the Chinese classics manifests its lived "existential" character, and Chinese hermeneutics amounts to an intense experiential scholarship. We will carry our explication further in Section Ⅳ by considering how such hermeneutical activities contain within them rich implications of "perlocutionary intentions," bringing on other interpretive systems and tendencies a considerable repercussion peculiar to it. In Section Ⅴ we gather together all these threads considered so far into a comprehensive conclusion. |
