英文摘要 | Since the 1960s, feminist discourse has been flourishing as a crucial branch of cultural critique. It is widely used as a tool to expose the prejudice of the man-centered view in many artistic works. In this paper, I use the mythological/feminist theory to analyze the film The piano. The theory is embraced by Carol Pearson and Katherine Pope, who in turn derive their views from Joseph Campbell's Hero with a Thousand Faces. Their aim is to discern the existence of female heroes as distinct from the male ones. Traditional criticism on mythology, like Joseph Campbell's, always focuses on the male heroes, emphasizing the significance of their adventures. Pearson and Pope want to redress the unbalancen trend of analyzing male heroes only. They base their theory on that of Joseph Campbell and further indicate its deficiency in incorporating the female heroes. Their parodic strategy of criticism is in tune with postmodernism. In the first part of this paper, I will introduce the feminist theory of Pearson and Pope and their relationship with Joseph Campbell. In the second part, I'll apply their theory to the film The Piano. I'll demonstrate the quality of a female hero in the protagonist of the film, Ada. I'll illustrate how she embodies the three categories of heroism—sage, artist and warrior, and the standard path of a hero: departure-initiation-return. In the last part, I'll summarize the significance of a female hero in this postmodern world. The aim of this paper, overall, is to prove that women are also capable of heroism. It is not the privilege of male characters alone. The task of feminist theory, like Pearson and Pope's, is to unearth the silenced female voices in traditional texts. Literary criticism has long been dominated by male perspectives. Feminist theory functions as a perfect remedy to their bias and prejudice. |
