英文摘要 | This essay is to discuss the historical background of American education. The author considers Thomas Jefferson, Horace Mann, Ralph Waldo Emerson, William James, John Dewey and Robert Hutchinson as the major contributors to the development of American education. The author contends that American education, based on freedom and democracy, emphasizes the equality of education among citizens. It also esteems moral value in its influences in education. Jefferson and Mann place the American education on a sound basis. Emerson encourages students' independence and freedom in pursue of education so that they can better initiate their personal creativity and educational advancement. Although Dewey is critisized as too liberal and too practical to appreciate the value of classic learnings, his concepts of democracy, scientific method, and pragmatic philosophy exerts tremendous influences in American education and worldwide education as well. |
