英文摘要 | Reading researchers as well as educators have become increasingly interested in the contributions of different orthographies to reading processes (Hung, Tzeng, Lee, & Chang, 1994; Hu & Catts, 1993; Perfetti & Zhang, 1991; Shieh, 1994). Chinese is the most commonly cited ideographic writing system which may entail reading processes different from an alphabetic orthography such as English. The results of present study help confirm the explanations for different points of view Li and Thompson(1982) , DeFrancis(1984) , and Coulmas(1984, 1989). The explanations for different points of view are that Li and Thompson's viewpoint is applicable for Chinese readers who are learning characters initially and DeFrancis's view is more appropriate at a later stage, since Chinese beginners may learn characters "logographically" at the beginning stage and "analytically" at a later stage. The interpretations suggested for Coulmas's linguistic theory are that form ぇ is when the sound is constructed by virtue of meaning such as when readers encounter picture writing characters or learn to read the Chinese characters the first time. Form ぉ,in which readers can use both semantic and phonetic cues to recognize a character, seems more appropriate for skilled readers, since the skill in which readers can use semantic and phonetic cues requires of reader abundant vocabulary and implicit linguistic knowledge. Form え fits the case when readers read words for meaning by mediation of phonology. Form え seems inapplicable in the present study. |
