英文摘要 | In the last years of Ming Dynasty, the survived loyalists with a common belief in Zen was a spectacular phenomenon. The reasons of their conversion might be to avoid catastrophe, to keep loyalty intact, to show determination not serving for the new dynasty, to plan for retrocession, to avoid ravages of soldiery, to stay in temples for political strife, or to admire Zen then converted to Buddhism. Tan Tang was a famous monk in the latter Ming Dynasty. He came from a family holding government official ranks for generations, well versed in poetry, calligraphy and painting. When the Ming collapsed, he left home and entered a Buddha temple as his hermitage. He was regarded as disobeying monk's rules because he enjoyed drinking a lot. From his poetry, We can fully understand his strong will of being a loyalist, how he was unwilling to force himself to become a useless hermit. This paper examined Tan Tang's family, life story, associates, hobbies, poetry, and the related books, trying to find out the development and characteristics of his personality, the reason and mood why he became a monk. We also tried to discover his aspirations and purposes from his expression of human suffering, sorrows for the world and his longing for his lost dynasty. |
