英文摘要 | Architectural ideas are translated into architectural spaces through the mediation of a variety of compositional principles. Addition and subtraction are two such principles. This is true for all architectures, in all cultures, at all times. Drawing on a variety of cross-cultural examples, ancient and modern, this essay attempts to develop a perspective on the validity and efficacy of the principle of subtraction as a major tool in the making and shaping of built form. Rooted in tradition, the subtractive principles have been followed over many millennia in China as manifested in the design and layout of its courtyard houses, free-plan dwellings, cave buildings and landscape gardens. Can these early indigenous Chinese forms and their progenies be viewed as precursors to their more recent Western Counterparts? |
