英文摘要 | The 1990s have been characterized by widespread discussions about the need for reform in science education. Concurrent with international efforts to reform science education, Taiwan has properly embarked on its own efforts to change the nature of science education. This paper comments on these efforts from the perspectives of two international visitors. It portrays science education reform in Taiwan in the context of global changes that are occurring throughout much of the world and in the context of institutional changes occurring within Taiwan. The paper attempts to elucidate unique assets, problems, and opportunities facing science education reform in Taiwan. The need to incorporate special attention to Taiwan's rich regional resources, local technologies and technology tools, Chinese contributions to technology and to perceptions of the natural world, strength in vocational education, and cultural traditions is briefly examined. The paper also briefly discusses some concerns that may need to be examined such as the role of tests in schools and the society. Some relevant issues are raised regarding science teacher education, teacher evaluation, and teacher engagement in school policy making. Finally, the need to develop standards in science education and to incorporate local resources and examples that are especially relevant to Taiwanese needs, realities, and culture is discussed. |
