英文摘要 | Some of the finest landslides in the world occur in the classical location where a permeable 'caprock' overlies a deformable underlayer. This can include any deformable rock, sands, silts, clays, marls, permafrost or salts. There is, in fact, a wide range of such landslide generators each with different properties and styles of failure. This paper describes one type only, namely the type of landslide known as a lateral spread where a massive rock mass overlies a ductile clay. The paper describes the essential morphological features of these slides and summarises the existing state of research. Although there are many examples in all continents and lateral spreading is of great concern to engineering and development projects, this category of slope failure has never received adequate research. There are technical difficulties because the landslides are often very large and the processes involved may be very slow but it is strange that the mechanisms are not well known and that few practicing engineers would be able to recognise the diagnostic signs. It is suggested that attention must be paid to these more obscure forms of mass movement if geotechnical science itself is to advance. |
