英文摘要 | In a democratic society, the major aim of education is to prepare students to be informed, rational, humane, and participating citizens committed to the expectations of the society. Therefore, we, as civics teachers, must understand the essentials of citizenship education thoroughly so that we are able to design adequate curriculums and to apply effective instruction to achieve this aim. In this sense, the purpose of this study is to examine the recent curriculum development of American citizenship education through carefully reviewing relevant literature. With regard to taking American education system as a model, it is because many scholars in the field agree that American education is one of the best systems in the world. The author also hopes that the findings of this study would be helpful for future curriculum development of Taiwan, the Republic of China. However, since a consensus on the term of citizenship education has not been reached, several definitions of citizenship education and its related terms must be listed out first. Then, the author focuses his discussion on the following points: a) the nature of citizenship education, b) the development of American citizenship education in historical perspective, c) the educational needs of democratic citizens, and d) the status of current citizenship education in the United States of America. Finally, the author concludes four potential trends of citizenship education for future curriculum renewal. These trends are: a) emphasis on global view for the interconnected and interdependent world, b) emphasis on multiculturalism for the increasing religious and ethnic diversity, c) community service as authentic learning, and d) thematic and interdisciplinary approach in instructional practice. |
