英文摘要 | The purpose of this paper is to further examine previous research in the effects of computer-mediated communication on intimacy. The functions of verbal and non-verbal cues and their roles in developing intimate relationship in cyberspace were examined. Since nonverbal cues are absent in the computer-mediated communication, verbal cues would be used by communicators to replace the functions of nonverbal cues in developing an intimate relationship. This paper thus focuses on the compensatory functions of verbal cues in the computer-mediated communication. Argyle and Dean's (1965) Intimacy Equilibrium Model provides a theoretical framework for understanding how such a compensation in the computer-mediated situation is possible, despite both verbal cues and nonverbal cues function complimentarily in a face-to-face situation. |
