英文摘要 | This article addresses three interrelated issues. First, it reviews how the post-1978 reforms have affected the structure of the party-state itself including its ideological self-definition. Secondly, it outlines how are reforms have affected the party-state's relationship to society in organizational terms. Thirdly, it discusses this relationship in terms of the decline in party control over discourse. While the reforms introduced by Deng Xiaoping and his supporters marked a significant liberalization of previous regime practice, it was never intended that they should lead to democratization of state and society. However, the reforms have led the party to redefine its relationship to society significantly and to adopt a definition of socialism that tries to legitimize almost all forms of economic experimentation. Socialist ideology as a genuine socialist ideology is not seen also relevant to China's future. Its continued usage merely underpins the party's self-proscribed legitimacy to rule. The reforms have affected the organizational structure of representation in China. While many writers have recently experimented with the notion of "civil society" to explain this phenomenon, here it is argued that the structures and their interrelationships begin to resemble more closely Schmitter's definition of "state corporatism." The final section of the article looks at the decline in control by the party-state over the discourse that is filling public spaces. Increasingly, public discourse is breaking free of the codes and linguistic phrases established by the party-state. A focus on this area reveals how, slowly but surely, the authority of the party is being undermined. In particular, this newly emerging discourse, prevalent in urban China, has the individual as its focus, a change virtually impossible for party veterans to contemplate. |
