英文摘要 | The impact of an expert system for automated detection of students' writing errors was studied in the Republic of China on Taiwan during the 1993 fall semester. All aspects of class teaching, including: course material, grading policies and homework assignments, were controlled to assure consistency between control and test groups. A pre and post survey was administered to measure students' attitudes about their own English skills. Feedback from the expert system was returned to students in the test group, while feedback from the system was withheld from the control group. Students' attitudes, as indicated by the surveys, did change significantly in seven out of nine areas for the test group and three out of nine for the control group. Both groups used computer software to complete assignments so that the actual use of computers was not questioned in this study, rather, the exact nature of the impact computer generated feedback has on students' perceptions about their own skills. Conclusions are included about the usefulness of such expert systems in the large ESL writing class situation that is prevalent in Taiwan today. Recommendations for further research are included. |
