英文摘要 | This paper introduces a total of 85 bronze wares of the Spring and Autumn period (772-481 B.C.); all of them feature bird-script inscriptions. The bulk of these objects are from the dukedoms of Yueh (42 pieces) and Ts'ai (22 pieces), and the remainder have their origins in the states of Wu, Ch'u, Tseng, and Sung. While the bird script is insribed exclusively on weapons, it also appears on the ritual vessels and musical instruments of the Yueh. As the states of Sung and Yueh had long had a custom of worshipping the bird, it is very likely that the bird script might have originated there. The majority of the Wu wares were made when Ho-lu (514-496 B.C.)was in power, and that the inscriptions on these objects bear a striking resemblance in type to those on the Sung pieces may be suggestive of the widespread influence of the later, On the other hand, the absence of the bird script on weapons produced during the reign of Fu-ch'ai(d.473 B.C.), King Ho-lu's son, may be attributed to the prevailing anti-Yueh sentiment of the time. The state of Ts'ai is never recorded to have had a bird worshipping tradition; yet, bird-script bronze inscriptions had enjoyed unforeseen popularity during the time of Duke Ch'an (n.d.). A reasonable explanation for such a phenomenon may point to the Duke's pro-Yueh political stance. Six spears of the state of Ts'ai are discussed in a rather detailed manner in this article. |
