中文摘要 | 本論文以書面問卷調查住在美國的中國學生及就業人士在設定的十四個情境中以 英語表謝意的方式,從而探討中國人學英語時的某些困境所在。結果顯示:社交接觸的頻率 影響學英語者之一般溝通能力及美語社會文化認知。此外,在某些情況,中國人以英語表達 謝意時,或因直接套用本國之語言文化模式,而呈現用語不當或溝通不良的現象。此間關係 如何,值得我們更進一步的探討。 本研究中,有些人除了缺乏英美社會文化知識外,文句中亦頻頻出現各種文法錯誤。尤其有 趣的是,英語中以 "I (really) appreciate it" 來表達謝意的句法,中國人不是不會使用 ,便是錯用成各種變異類型:如 "I very appreciate",甚或 "I am appreciated"。 因此 ,根據本研究結果,英語教學課程除了應適時適量增添社會語言學的常識之外,亦應重估如 何幫助學生更易了解英語文法及用字,從而提升其一般溝通能力及綜合語文能力。 |
英文摘要 | This paper investigates one particular hearer-supportive speech act, the expression of gratitude, as realized by Native English speakers and two groups of Chinese ESL speakers. A written role-play questionnaire in English involving 14 situations is completed by each subject. The results indicate that the opportunity for social interaction plays a crucial role in facilitating Chinese ESL learners' communicative competence in general and sociolinguistic competence in particular. It is also found that in some cases Chinese ESL learners exhibit pragmatic failure which may arise from pragmatic transfer. A further study is called for to investigate to what extent pragmatic transfer and pragmatic failure correlate with each other. In addition to the lack of sociocultural proficiency, many subjects in the present study reveal frequent grammatical errors in various types. It is especially interesting that the expression of "I (really) appreciate it" is either missing or overgeneralized by most Chinese English speakers with their interlanguage patterns ranging from "I very appreciate" to "I am appreciated." Therefore, in addition to the incorporation of sociolinguistic knowledge in the regular curriculum, the results suggest a need to reassess the extent to which grammatical competence may be easily acquired, hence facilitating the acquisition of communicative competence and overall language proficiency. |
