英文摘要 | The advent of X-ray imaging realized the dream of human beings to nodestructively visualize the internalstructure of a human body. It also brought out a great impact on clinical diagnosis and treatment. However, the conventional X-ray imaging techniques still has some drawbacks. The first problem is that an X-ray imageis basically a superposition of many image planes in the direction of the X-ray beams. As a result, it not onlycannot provide the depth information but also increase the difficulty to distinguish a normal tissue from anabnormal tissue. The second problem is on an X-ray image, it is not easy to distinguish two adjacent tissuesof which attenuation coefficiencies are very close, e.g., two adjacent soft tissues. Furthermore, because ofthese two problems, it is difficult to use an X-ray image in quantitative analysis. But, these problems havebeen solved in computed tomographic imaging.Through image reconstruction, the computed tomographic imaging has revolutionized the techniques andquality of modern clinical diagnosis and treatment. On one hand, for many kinds of diseases which weredifficult to detect, such as a small tumor, the computed tomographic imaging can now clearly indicate its sizeand location. One the other hand, the functional images even provide the opportunity to understand thebiochemical and physiological processes of the human body, and, moreover, to early detect the potentialdiseases. The primary goals of this paper areto (1) describethe deficiency of the conventional imaging techniques suchas X-ray imaging in the clinical diagnosis and treatment: (2) give an idea on how the "image reconstruction"accomplishes its mission to visualize every point in the human body, in which we will briefly describe thereconstruction methods for the X-ray CT and PET: (3) provide examples on the applications of computedtomographic images to the modern clinical diagnosis and treatment.
