英文摘要 | This paper is an investigation into the "double-voiced discourse" in the structure of Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God, with a focus on the relationship between the narrator and the female protagonist, Janie. The first two chapters are analyzed to illustrate the existence of the double-voice; the development of this double-voice in the major episodes involving Nanny, Logan Killicks, Joe Starks, and Tea Cake is then examined. Finally, the ending is considered in relation to the novel as a frame-story. The double-voiced discourse in Their Eyes is manifested in its form and structure. Their Eyes is a frame-story within which the dialogue concerns three parties: the characters, the narrator, and the author. The author exerts her influence from without, and her intentions are refracted through both the characters and the narrator. As an authorial voice, the narrator places herself outside the "direct discourse" of the novel's characters by allowing another storyteller--Janie--to tell her own story. While on the surface they are two separate voices, there occurs a merging of the narrator's and female protagonist's voices as the narrator's objectification decreases. Through her telling of the story to Pheoby (an understanding and educable audience), Janie is enabled to give a personal answer to her own quest for self-realization. The narrator does not participate in any actions within which the story of Janie's quest for personal integrity occurs; nevertheless, the narrator's voice dramatizes her own presence. Whereas the narrator's formal speech is used for criticism, the characters' dialectal discourse is used to indicate their involvement in life. Through the development of this double-voiced discourse, we understand the insights of Janie Mae Crawford Killicks Starks Woods--a black woman. |
