英文摘要 | When species number is considered as an index of diversity, coral reef fishes form one of the most diverse community associations of animals (particularly of vertebrates) in nature. The total number of coral reef fish species is estimated to be between 6,000-8,000. This high diversity of fish assemblages on coral reefs as attracted much attention ever since the introduction of underwater surveys for fish-populations by Brock in 1954. Questions such as how a community is structured, and how to identify those factors likely to be responsible for determining the observed structures are frequently asked, but the answers remain inconclusive, despite considerable efforts. In the present review we deal with hypotheses which have emerged in the contexts of resource partitioning, density-dependent life history parameters, and recruitment limitation. As the mechanisms proposed to account for the maintenance of community structure tend to emphasise different phases in the life history of the fish, the life history parameters such as spawning, larval settlement, resource utilization and resource partitioning between fishes, which are essential to a detailed assessment of these hypotheses, are also included. |
