| 英文摘要 | There are 430,973 hectares of plantation forests in Taiwan in 1986, of which 255,642 hectares belong to the national forests that are managed by Taiwan Forest Bureau, and 175,331 hectares are public and Private-owned forests. In the national forests, 96% of the area were planted from 1946 to 1986, and the remaining 4% were planted before the second world war. Most of the National Forests are younger stands, suitable silvicultural practices are necessary in order to promote better growth and protection of the forest. The total growing stocks of the existing plantation forest are 14,320,000 cubic meters in 1983. 4,310,000 cubic meters of which are cryptomeria (Japanese fir), which constitutes the largest plantation area, but due to low price and severe squirrel damage to the timber, the plantation of cryptomeria has been stopped during recent years. China fir, towleaf pine and acacia, also have large growing stock each has over one million cubic meters respectively. Taiwan fir, Luanta fir, alder, paulownia, ash, camphor tree, Zelkova and teak also are important commercial species in Taiwan. The timbers from plantation forest will contribute more to the .raw material supply for the increasing demand of the forest product industries in Taiwan, because they will substitute a part of the imported timbers gradually, therefore they will play a more important role in the ever-expanding forest product industries in Taiwan in the future. |
