| 英文摘要 | The grey mullet (Mugil cephalus Linnaeus) is widely distributed in the temperate and tropical zones of the world. It is fairly resistant to low water temperature and is an omnivorous fish. Besides, it is euryhaline and can be stocked in either brackishwater or freshwater ponds. Grey mullet is thus expected to play a very important role in future productivity as a result of efficient utilization of water area. In Taiwan, grey mullet is one commercially important fish. Every winter, from December to Frbruary, 700,000 to 1,000,000 mullet are caught from the west coastal waters of the central and south Taiwan. It is a delicious table fish and its dried roe is a gourmet food of very high price. Its wild fingerlings are collected and sold as many as possible but there are unpredictable fluctuations in occurrence and abundance. To ensure an adequate source of supply of fingerlings for culture, experiments of artificial propagation were begun in 1963 at Sanwei, Kaohsiung, but it was discontinued in the year of 1967. From 1968 on, the experiments were carried out at the newly established Tungkang Marine Laboratory. So far it has been carried out for a total of twelve years. Experimental results, such as initial success of induced spawning in 1963/1964, first record of two fingerlings reared to stocking size in 1968/1969, production of 21,688 fingerlings in 1972/1973 when preliminary techniques of mass propagation were established, findings on ecological and physiological knowledge of mullet propagation in 1973/1974 and 1974/1975, second first record of completing the life cycle under captivity in 1975/1976, and unsolved problems, are summarized in this paper. |
