(Selections of Refined Literature) contains a section called "Poems on History" ("Yongshi" 詠史), which includes twenty-one poems composed between the Jian'an 建安 Period (196-220) and the Liu Song Dynasty (420-479). This paper examines the poems on history by probing the relationship between historical accounts and what is presented in the poems. The poets' intimate relationship with the past is demonstrated in their poems through three approaches to historical lore. In each case, the poetry expresses poets' opinions and emotions through the use of historical accounts, but with different degrees to which the poet's own opinion is foregrounded. In the first case, history itself is in the foreground, while the poet's opinion is tacitly expressed, except occasionally in the closing lines, through historical figures and events which he chooses to select and emphasize. In the second case, the historical material is used more rhetorically, as relevant examples to bolster the opinion being expressed. In the last case, the poet fully expresses his emotions against a background of historical narrative reduced to a brief allusion; in this case, poems on history seem very similar to yonghuai shi 詠懷詩 (Songs of My Cares). Examining these approaches both allows us to better understand history's dissemination through poetry and reveals the intricacy and complex nature of yongshi shi. Furthermore, it facilitates our comprehension of the function of history in Chinese poetry. |
