| 英文摘要 | Yan Fu 嚴復 (1854–1921) was a renowned translator celebrated for his broad perspective, whose translations profoundly influenced modern Chinese thought. However, it was only recently that scholars discovered a work attributed to Yan Fu himself: Lectures on Politics (Zhengzhi jiangyi 政治講義). The vast majority of this text was directly translated from the late nineteenthcentury British scholar John Robert Seeley’s (1834–1895) Introduction to Political Science: Two Series of Lectures. This article aims to address a significant question: Why did Yan Fu place such high value on this work? The central theme of this work is the discussion of “political liberty.” Yet in his translation of Montesquieu’s The Spirit of the Laws, Yan Fu employed the term guoqun ziyou 國羣自由 to denote “political liberty.” In Lectures on Politics, by contrast, he asserted that the term “political liberty” should be rendered as zhengjie ziyou 政界自由 rather than the conventionally accepted zhengzhi ziyou 政治自由. This paper demonstrates why Lectures on Politics constitutes the most crucial material for studying Yan Fu’s political thought. It also explains that overlooking these significant issues makes it difficult to gain a profound and accurate understanding of Yan Fu’s ideas on liberty. Furthermore, the paper points out that even Benjamin Schwartz (1916–1999), a scholar of immense renown in Yan Fu studies, either glossed over these major issues or offered only superficial interpretations, particularly regarding Lectures on Politics itself. |
