| 英文摘要 | The tombs of Cai Zhong and Cai Shu seen in present-day Shangcai County are not relics of the Western Zhou Dynasty. Yang Tingwang and Jin Baofu, two Qing Dynasty magistrates of Shangcai County, claimed to have identified tombs of the two Marquises Cai and fashioned them into local "ancestors" of Shangcai County. During the Kangxi reign, Yang Tingwang converted the Dongyue Temple into the Marquis Cai Temple and later falsely identified the tomb of Cai Zhong. Subsequently, official texts such as the Kangxi Shangcai County Gazetteer, the Yongzheng Henan Provincial Gazetteer, and Qianlong Great Qing Unification Gazetteer included the temple and the tomb, establishing them as genuine. During the Xianfeng period, Fu Jinbao began searching for the tomb of Cai Shu, and, by misinterpreting classical texts, located the tomb of the "Cai Ancestor" in Shangcai. After a hundred years of the propagation of this narrative, people today perceive the two Marquis Cai tombs to be "pre-Qin historical sites." Cai Zhong has become the "first ancestor" of Shangcai County, and Cai Shu's tomb has become the place where people surnamed Cai search for their roots. During the construction of this historical narrative, the fake "Order of Cai Zhong" in the Book of Documents became an important piece of evidence. Even as the trend of distinguishing counterfeits flourished in the mid to late Qing, the false chapters in the Book of Documents were still given weight in the construction of this local historical narrative. |
