| 英文摘要 | The Swedish Mission Society in southern Xinjiang played a pivotal role in the history of Muslim evangelisation in China for almost half a century from 1892 to 1938. Unfortunately, there is a dearth of relevant Chinese discourse. This article attempts to use primary sources such as Swedish archives to show that although the Society weathered many storms, it overcame the difficulties of missionary work among Muslims through social services such as schools, hospitals, orphanages and a printing press. There was even a time when the churches had as many as 500 members. In 1938, however, due to Xinjiang dictator Sheng Shicai's pro-Soviet strategy, using the excuse to expel the missionaries. But this seemingly abrupt end to history continued, as Tornisa, a Christian in southern Xinjiang, surprisingly wrote to Sweden during the turbulent and xenophobic Cultural Revolution. This article also attempts to analyze how Christians in southern Xinjiang made the choice between life and death when faced with the dilemma of political attacks on their faith. The power of their faith, the comfort of their hymns and the witness of their martyrdom are indeed worthy of reflection by believers today. |
