| 英文摘要 | As a central figure in the Guwen (古文) Movement of the Tang dynasty, Liu Zongyuan exemplified the spirit of literary innovation rooted in classical tradition. His biographical writings—referred to as “new biographies” ( 新傳)—emerged from the cultural continuum and perpetuation of traditional Chinese literature ( 薪傳), reflecting both profound ideological depth and stylistic experimentation. This paper explores the philosophical and literary dimensions of Liu’s major biographical works. “The Biography of Guo Tuotuo, the Tree Planter” expresses a Daoist-tinged political vision of aligning with the natural order; “The Biography of the Carpenter” articulates principles of governance through the lens of Mencian thought; “The Biography of Ouji, the Boy” conveys the Confucian concern for the state and the people's livelihood; “The Biography of Song Qing” captures the melancholic disillusionment of failed officials toward utilitarian social relationships; and “The Biography of Li Chi” critiques the moral decline of scholars, emphasizing the value of inner cultivation. Liu’s biographical innovation lies in his creative adaptation of literary forms to create his new biographies: “The Biography of Guo Tuotuo, the Tree Planter” carries on the dialogue format tradition and skillfully blends it with allegory; “The Biography of the Carpenter” inherited the spirit of the categorized biography, creating a new form of the individual categorized biography, whose argumentation fully embodies the traditional emphasis on conveying moral and political precepts (載道); “The Biography of Ouji, the Boy” inherited Sima Qian's historical principles of “one biography, one central theme,” the spirit of “admiring the strange and loving talent,” and the technique of “embedding judgment within narration,” offering a composition full of novelty by writing about an ordinary child with the hand of a great historian; “The Biography of Song Qing” echoes Sima Qian's spirit and technique in writing biographies for merchant, resulting in a biographical variation that interweaves narration and commentary ; and “The Biography of Li Chi” inherited the core feature of historical biographies that privileges the person, while strengthening the traditional tone of sighing and chanting, thus innovating a new type of biography imbuing it with the narrative tenor of the chuanqi (傳奇). In conclusion, this paper argues that Liu Zongyuan’s biographical writings represent a pivotal moment in the evolution of classical Chinese literature, demonstrating how innovation arises through the conscious inheritance, adaptation, and enhancement of past models. |
