| 英文摘要 | Tung Wah hospital has been one of the most well-known medical-cum-charitable institutions of Hong Kong since the 19th century. First published in 1873, the Zhengxin lu (official annual report) of the Hospital documents information including lists of management executives, financial statements, scopes of charity activities, and most relevant to the present study, the sources of donations and sponsors of each year, including those from Chinese opera troupes that have been performing in the Colony. The earliest record shows that the Hospital placed donation books at the opera theaters of Hong Kong, serving as significant source materials and data in studying the history of Chinese opera in Hong Kong. Based on this body of newly discovered materials, this article analyzes the cultural history of Cantonese opera in Hong Kong during late Qing, addressing the issues of "bendi ban" (local troupe) vs "waijiang ban" (extra-provincial troupe), the nature and popularity of major Cantonese opera troupes as reflected in the donation books, and the rise of the Hong Kong as a new market for Chinese opera performance in the second half of the 19th century. |
