| 英文摘要 | This study reconsiders Adam Ferguson's The History of the Progress and Termination of the Roman Republic (1783) within the broader landscape of eighteenth-century Roman historiography, especially in its dialogue with Edward Gibbon's The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (1776-1788). Ferguson's narrative reveals a tension between the neo- Machiavellian language of civic conflict and virtue and polite culture's ideal of order and harmony. From this tension, he developed a form of historical writing that sought to reconcile moral reflection with political analysis. Through his treatment of sources, character, and institutions, Ferguson explained the logic of Rome's republican decline while addressing the contemporary debates on republicanism and empire. The article repositions Ferguson within eighteenth-century historiography and highlights his distinctive contribution to the moral uses of history. |
