| 英文摘要 | Purpose: This study explored the environmental footprint of running races to contribute to the establishment of an environmental certification scheme. Methods: Focus groups were conducted with individuals who had extensive practical experience in running event organizations or environmental sustainability. The Delphi method was adopted to reach consensus. All selected participants have had extensive practical experience in organizing running events or environmental sustainability. Results: Three primary scopes were identified after the focus group: organizational involvement, eco-friendly measures, and carbon footprint calculation. Eight sub-scopes were deemed suitable and incorporated into the scope of eco-friendly measures. A total of 49 items were developed to assess environmental protection practices in running races. Results from two rounds of the Delphi method revealed that more than 70% of the items were recognized as necessary by consensus. All items in the organizational involvement subscope reached a high consensus. Fewer than half of the items in the carbon footprint calculation subscope were perceived as nonsignificant. Conclusion: Environmental sustainability efforts for running races begin with the race organizer. For example, the organizer should establish a dedicated team, formulate a sustainability plan, allocate the required budget, and put in place performance evaluation mechanisms. Unlike most sporting events in fixed venues, running races are usually held in various outdoor locations. Hence, all participants and necessary materials must be transported, which makes logistics, transportation, refreshment supplies, and venue setup relatively complex. These factors underscore the unique considerations for environmental sustainability certification in road running events. The actions of event stakeholders strongly influence overall sustainability performance. In the present study, approximately 80% of all criteria items reached broad consensus. These items can be implemented with relative ease, whereas others require additional resources and are more challenging. The findings of this study may guide the development of an effective certification scheme. Originality/value: Due to climate change, developing climate action is essential. Taiwan's sports sector currently lacks sustainability certification and lags behind other local industries and international sporting organizations that have already established similar initiatives. Therefore, this study aimed to create a performance assessment system to evaluate the environmental sustainability of road races. The findings not only broaden the knowledge of sport sustainability but also offer a practical framework for the road-running race community. |
