| 英文摘要 | Tai Chi Men is a martial arts and qigong practice with Taoist mysticism rooted in Taiwan. Influenced by the promotion of qigong in mainland China, the organization expanded rapidly and attracted numerous members. However, by the end of 1996, amid the government's campaign against religious corruption, the Taipei District Court Prosecutor Hou Kuan-jen raided Tai Chi Men, leading to the arrest of its leader, Master Hong Tao-tze, and key members, as well as the seizure of their assets. The National Taxation Bureau determined that the payments made by students to their master as tokens of respect should be considered tuition fees and subject to taxation. Furthermore, without approval from the Ministry of Finance, the National Taxation Bureau ultimately used the amount transferred by the judicial authorities to estimate the total amount of tax evasion by Tai Chi Men over the years Despite the setback, Tai Chi Men did not falter. On the contrary, besides seeking judicial remedies, it actively engaged in large-scale martial arts performances, participated in social activities, campaigned for tax reforms, expanded internationally, promoted martial virtues, advocated a culture of love and peace, and called for conscience, thus creating a new paradigm for civil religion. |
