| 英文摘要 | Takashima Tomon (1832-1914) was known as the "Sage of the I Ching in Japan." His work, "Takashima I Ching," is regarded as one of the most prestigious books on divination not only in modern Japan but also worldwide. The Meiji Restoration, commonly praised as the most successful example of Westernization among East Asian countries, in fact, retained traditional culture and was more influenced by it than by Westernization in its true extent. This article attempts to explore the cultural and ideological context of the Meiji Restoration era in Japan through the lens of Takashima Tomon's I Ching studies. By analyzing the Meiji Restoration from the unique perspective of I Ching philosophy, it reveals that the apparent comprehensive Westernization was, in reality, guided by traditional thoughts, especially the I Ching philosophy of that time, to achieve the structure of thought that upholds "Japanese learning as the foundation, Western learning as the application" to maintain the unbroken line of the Emperor and uphold the ideology of revering the Emperor and expelling the barbarians. Moreover, by examining the influence of Takashima Tomon's I Ching studies on key Japanese political figures such as Emperor Meiji, Itō Hirobumi, Sanjō Sanetomi, Kido Takayoshi, and Ōkubo Toshimichi, the article extends the discussion to the ideological precursors that led to the concept of the "Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere" and eventually to the "Pacific War." |
