| 英文摘要 | The Chinese Bible translations, "Jiushizhu yesu xin yizhao shu" (1854) and "Jiu yizhao shengshu" (1855), both had the seal script title engraved on their covers, along with the inscriptions "Fuhanhui" in Chinese and "Gützlaff's Translation" in English. This indicated that Karl F. A. Gützlaff (1803-1851), a Prussian missionary in China, translated both versions. "Fuhanhui" referred to the Chinese Evangelization Society in London, which took over the publishing affairs of the "Chinese Union" in Hong Kong in 1854. The Chinese Union was established by Gützlaff in the 1840s, and it was the earliest Protestant missionary society to train Chinese converts on self-propagation. The revisions of Gützlaff's translations were published and distributed by this society. Gützlaff's initial version of the Bible translation was published in the late 1830s, and subsequent revisions and reprints had led to significant format changes and gradual textual differences. The Chinese Evangelization Society published the aforementioned translations after the translator's death, and they were collectively revised by Western missionaries and Chinese believers from the Chinese Union. This version, referred to as the "Chinese Union Standard Version" by me, could be considered the definitive version of Gützlaff's work. This article focuses on the genesis of the Chinese Union Standard Version, revealing its appearance and characteristics, tracing its related translations, clarifying significant points in the revision process, and ultimately exploring the potential revision assistants through rare manuscripts written by believers from the Chinese Union. |
