| 英文摘要 | A significant proportion of people in society do not listen to classical music. Some of the most common reasons include: (1) "It's too hard to understand"; (2) "Many pieces are too long"; (3) "Even if some pieces are beautiful, I can never remember their names"; and (4) "Compared to classical music, listening to melodic pop songs, film scores, or light jazz is much more relaxing and doesn't feel like a burden."What's even more interesting is that when I was preparing to establish the Xinyi Community College in Taipei, we distributed over 6,000 course preference surveys to residents in Xinyi and Songshan Districts. From the more than 4,000 responses we received, statistical analysis revealed that the most popular course was-surprisingly-Classical Music Appreciation, with a significant lead over all other options. However, when we enthusiastically proceeded with enrollment based on the survey rankings, only a mere nine community members actually signed up for the Classical Music Appreciation *course in the first semester. As both the instructor of this course and the planner and executor of the enrollment program, seeing the computer classes fill up-with one class of 30 students quickly expanding to two, then still not meeting demand; the singing class reaching 102 students in a single session; and the Zheng-style Tai Chi class immediately filling to capacity-I was left with mixed emotions and deep reflection. And so, my teaching career in* Classical Music Appreciation began in this way. Furthermore, in many radio and TV interviews, when guests are asked about their hobbies, the most common answers are invariably sports and listening to music. Yet when it comes to classical music, the most frequently mentioned composer is always Beethoven, and the most cited work is, without fail, the world-famous Symphony No. 5 (the "Fifth Symphony"). Therefore, in keeping with popular opinion, this article will also take this piece as its starting point for discussion. |
