| 英文摘要 | This article discusses the meaning of the character 㽙(yun), commonly found in bronze inscriptions. In past scholarhip, this character was interpreted in two ways: one held that it means "permanently," while the other held that it is a phonetic loan for "允 (yun)." This paper begins by compiling a corpus of relevant bronze inscriptions in order to establish the range of contexts where this character appears. It then critiques the two prevailing interpretations, finding them to be inconclusive. This article then takes a different approach, arguing through phonological relationships, grammatical positions, and cultural ideologies that the character 㽙 in the benedictory phrases represents the term "綏 (sui)," which mean "steadily." Beyond benedictory phrases, the same character also appears in the interpretation of "Song You Shi Yan Dui" (宋右師延敦 Dui of Song's Right Minister Yan). The context in which this character is used differs, and this article points out that this sentence should be interpreted as "妥 (tuo)," which is a term related to "綏 (sui)" that means "appropriately" or "properly." Although the same character is used, by distinguishing the contexts-whether discussing past facts or future wishes, and whether the speaker can control the subject's actions-綏 and 妥 can be clearly differentiated. Following this rationale, two related character forms found in Chu bamboo slips can be interpreted correctly. In "Feng Xu Zhi Ming" (封許之命 The Command Enfeoffing Xu), this character should be interpreted as 妥. In "Si Gao" (四告 Four Pray), this character should be interpreted as 綏. |
