| 英文摘要 | The Guan Yin Temple in Kuala Lumpur boasts a rich century-old history steeped in spiritual significance. Originally established as a Taoist sanctuary, it served as a re vered space for the local Hokkienese community to pay homage to Huat Chu Kong, al ongside other folk deities. Its importance was officially recognized when the Selangor British colonial government gazetted its grant to the Selangor Hokkien Association for stewardship. In 1924, a pivotal moment occurred when the association entrusted a mo nk with the temple's management, marking the commencement of its transition toward s a Buddhization. Over time, with the association's approval, successive resident monk s at the Guan Yin Temple dedicated efforts to reinforce its Buddhist identity. This tran sformation manifested through various initiatives, including enhanced administrative p rotocols, temple refurbishments, the introduction of new principal deities, and the host ing of religious events. Despite these developments, the essence of the temple's Taoist heritage remains intact, with the revered Taoist gods still revered alongside Buddhist representations. This harmonious coexistence reflects the inclusive nature of the templ e, embracing both Taoist and Buddhist traditions while serving as a spiritual haven for devotees of diverse backgrounds. Towards the close of the previous century, the Sela ngor Hokkien Association reclaimed management authority over the temple, appointin g lay personnel to oversee its day-to-day operations. Nonetheless, the religious ceremo nies conducted within the Guan Yin Temple continue to be officiated by monks, exten ding even to the rituals dedicated to Taoist deities. Remarkably, this dynamic has foste red a unique environment where Taoism and Buddhism coexist, albeit with a predomi nant Buddhist influence. This article meticulously traces the chronological evolution o f Guan Yin Temple's Buddhization process, delineating its progression through distinc t phases of development. Furthermore, it conducts an insightful analysis of the temple' s Buddhist characteristics across these stages and examines their implications. With th e Selangor Kuala Lumpur Hokkien Association's reinstatement of managerial prerogat ives, the article endeavours to elucidate the association's role in facilitating the Buddhi zation trajectory. Through comprehensive research and discourse, this exploration end eavours to shed light on the cultural and historical significance of Guan Yin Temple in Kuala Lumpur, a site often overlooked in scholarly discourse. It aspires to stimulate d ialogue among diverse stakeholders and individuals, catalysing a deeper understandin g and appreciation of this venerable institution. |
