| 英文摘要 | This paper is to explore the uses of indirectness in expressions of disagreement in intercultural conversations between Taiwanese and North Americans. The source of data for the study is a corpus of tape recordings of Taiwanese and native speakers of English in discussion and problem-solving dyads. The sequential information in their discourse as a realization of indirectness in their expressions of disagreement is culture-specific. The Taiwanese preference for an inductive discourse pattern, from a pragmatic politeness view point, could be motivated by giving reasons and detail to support propositions, which are manifestations of the Taiwanese sense of the size of the imposition and the need for politeness. The native speakers of English, on the other hand, have a higher tendency to organize discourse information deductively. A deductive discourse structure is characterized by giving the main or first topic at the beginning followed by supportive information, which can be seen as a speaker’s attempt to lessen the face threatening force The findings are essentially in line with the stereotypical perception of "frank" and open Westerners and "inscrutable" Chinese. Other factors are more related to the immediate context of conversation, rather than the cultural backgrounds of the participants. The forms of indirectness in the patterns of organization examined in this study both reflect and reveal the world of their Taiwanese and NES users. The research results also provide significant evidence to the theories of intercultural communication. |
