The purpose of this study is to explore the perceptions of hospitalized elderly patients regarding the caring behaviors of nurses. Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive research design was adopted, utilizing a structured questionnaire and two self-developed in-depth interview questions. A convenience sample of 40 hospitalized elderly patients from internal and external medicine departments of a regional teaching hospital in southern Taiwan was selected. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistical analysis with SPSS for Windows version 20.0, while the interview responses were analyzed using content analysis. Results: The average score for the perception of nurses' caring behaviors was 3.75 (SD = 0.27), ranging between "often" and "always." The highest-scoring item in this study was, "When the nurse cares for me, I feel safe," while the lowest-scoring item was, "I feel comfortable talking about myself with this nurse." Regarding the perceived importance of caring behaviors, the highest-rated item was, "I feel that the nurse values my needs," while the lowest-rated item remained, "I feel comfortable talking about myself with this nurse." Qualitative data analysis revealed that "frequent attention" and "kind attitude" were the most frequently mentioned aspects of nurses' caring behaviors. Conclusion: In this study, the elderly patients were more aware of the action behaviors in respect to the caring behaviors of the nursing staff.
