| 英文摘要 | Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, visited Taiwan on August 2-3, 2022. She was the third-ranked figure in American politics. As a result, when she originally planned to come to Taiwan in April, she encountered the strong opposition from China. However, she did not back down, which also accentuated the success of Taiwan’s “parliamentary diplomacy.” On the day Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan, China immediately announced that it would conduct live-fire military exercises at six places around Taiwan from the 4th to the 6th, forming a “quasi-blockade” model. However, after launching nine “Dongfeng” missiles from 13:00 to 16:00 on the afternoon of the 4th, China immediately announced the end of the exercise. The reason why China has downsized this military exercise was because of the high international backlash and the completion of “big internal propaganda.” In contrast, the calmness and maturity shown by President Ing-wen Tsai regarding this incident actually won international recognition. China's military exercise caused high tension in neighboring countries, especially the United States and Japan, and also aroused dissatisfaction among the Taiwanese. However, polls showed that as many as 78% of the Taiwanese were not afraid. High international attention also accentuated the importance of Taiwan's semiconductor industry. However, Kuomintang sent its Vice Chairman Andrew Hsia to visit China during China’s military exercises against Taiwan. KMT Party Chairman Eric Chu walked away when questioned by foreign media. The U.S. President Joe Biden gave a rare media interview in September after China’s military exercises against Taiwan, admitting that the U.S. military would protect Taiwan. On the contrary, the Russian President Vladimir Putin rarely criticized the United States' provocative behavior on the Taiwan issue. |
