| 英文摘要 | The adverb "還" in Chinese, meaning 'yet, still', has different pronunciations across various Chinese dialects. Hence one gets confused about recognizing them as the same word from a linguistic point of view, and the history of those different sounds becomes obscure. The main purpose of the present paper is to prove the consistency between these pronunciations and the historical pronunciations of "還" in literature. The evolution is primarily attributed to the irregular sound changes resulting from weak pronunciation and the loss of nasal finals. Also, the paper aims to show a concise history of the diachronic development of the adverb "還" in Mandarin. Concluded from historical materials recorded from the 16th to 20th century, it can be determined that the change was initially observed in the Liaodong dialect in the 16th century, and developed faster in Northern Mandarin than in Southern Mandarin. |
