英文摘要 | Lu ZhiShen is one of the few characters that end well in the Shui Hu Zhuan (Water Margin). The process of Lu's religious conversion through violence, the the debut to the last peaceful passing away YuanJi, is depicted in detail in Yuan WuYa's one-hundred-and-twenty-chapter version in the late Ming Dynasty. The development of Lu's life polarizes in different scenarios, killing Cheng Tu for townswoman Chin TsuiLien, escaping to a monastery hideout in Mountain Wutai and being a monk but ending up banished to a vegetable garden, almost losing his life for brotherhood, and murdering and killing to being religious. The dissimilar ordeals foster distinctive mindsets and qualities in Lu, which fits the theory of the individuation process proposed by C.G Jung (1875-1951). Looking from the outside, Lu seems to be abrasive and violent; however, through the scarring and ravaging experiences, there comes the elevation, conversion, and eventually, the Buddha nature. If the author of Shui Hu Zhuan (Water Margin) means to convey reflections on practices of Buddhism, the story of Lu ZhiShen properly servers the purpose. The research aims to examine how the obstacles in Lu's life cultivate him being a hero and his individuation process through the calling, suffering, and returning. |
