英文摘要 | The Great Cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) is a waterbird of considerable concern in wetland sustainable management. Studying the wintering habitat utilization of the Great Cormorant is essential for the species’ management; however, a comprehensive understanding of wintering habitat utilization of the East Asian population is relatively lacking. This study aimed to investigate the wintering habitat preferences of the Great Cormorants and the differences in diurnal and nocturnal requirements. The study focused on the cormorant population in Kinmen, Taiwan. We conducted surveys from November, 2020, to March, 2021, using the flock counting method, in 86 inland aquatic areas and 387 embankment areas and collected various environmental variables. Results revealed that the water surface area and forest length along the embankment were the primary factors influencing the number of cormorant individuals, and the degree of road development was also an essential environmental factor affecting the cormorant resting embankment. Furthermore, the proportion of forest area within a 500-meter radius of water bodies and forest height along the embankment were critical determinants affecting the night roosting of cormorants. We suggest effective wintering habitat management for the cormorants should prioritize the environmental quality of nocturnal habitats and forest regeneration, especially on the northeastern embankment sheltered from the northeast monsoon. It emphasizes maintaining water body sizes and riparian forest zone integrity and carefully evaluating the impact of road development and expansion around water bodies. The results of this study not only provide background information for assessing regional management, but also fill the gap in the study on the wintering habitat of cormorants in East Asia, serving as an indispensable part of the future studies linking the migratory life cycle of cormorant populations. |
