英文摘要 | The “sword lion screen” in the collection of Haishan Hall, a Tainan City-designated historical monument, has religious significance. It was placed in the atrium between the main gate and main hall to ward off evil spirits. As such, it was damaged due to long-term exposure to sunlight, rain, and wind, impacting its use and exhibition and education func- tions. The Tainan City Government decided to restore it, to enable it to be preserved and for the public to understand its religious meaning. The objectives of this cultural artifact restoration were the repair of deteriorated, missing, and damaged parts and the return to its original appearance and functions. The Tainan City Government considered the religious meaning of the sword lion screen during its restoration. As it is traditionally thought to ward off evil spirits, it was placed back in the atrium between the main gate and the main hall. Artisanal techniques such as joinery, carving, and painting were used in the production of this screen. Therefore, it was hoped that traditional craftspersons could make use of these methods to restore it. In addition to completing the restoration and display of this cultural artifact, the work of traditional crafts- persons during the repair of its disintegrated, damaged, and loose elements was recorded to pass on and continue traditional restoration techniques. |
